Given the number of users who are eligible for an upgrade, Dan Ives of the investment company Wedbush Securities predicts that the iPhone 15 series will be one of Apple's best-selling models ever.

There are 250 million iPhones that are more than four years old and still in use, so we will likely see a big wave of upgrades once the iPhone 15 series arrives, presumably this September as per Apple's regular schedule. Ives gave a positive forecast for Apple's stock prices on CNBC in part because of this.

In light of the recently announced Apple Vision Pro AR headset, Ives was also optimistic about Apple's future success. This first for Apple has generated a lot of buzz despite not going on sale until next year (unlike the iPhone 15) and being listed at an eye-watering $3,500.

But how urgently do we need to upgrade?

These 250 million smartphones would include models at least as old as the iPhone 11, according to a closer examination of Ives' iPhone statistics. Apple has confirmed that iOS 17 is compatible with devices dating all the way back to the iPhone XS and iPhone XR, which were released the year before the iPhone 11 series. iOS 17 was just introduced at WWDC 2023. This may persuade some customers to put off updating for another year because it means that many devices in the group will continue to receive full software support for at least another year.

Apple's updated equipment might be more compelling. All iPhone 15 models, according to rumors, may include Dynamic Island notches, a potent A16 CPU, and more practical USB-C charging.

More modern A17 chips will also be included in the Pro and Pro Max variants, with the Pro Max reportedly getting a brand-new periscope telephoto camera. These capabilities, along with those from the current iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, such as 48MP primary cameras and 120Hz screens, may entice users to upgrade to the iPhone 15 in September.

Take a look at our iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max for all the most recent rumors if you possess an older iPhone and want additional information on what to anticipate from Apple's upcoming smartphone lineup. Hopefully, we can assist you in determining whether you'll be updating this year, if you're one of the 250 million owners of older iPhone models, or not.
